Bucharest, 25 October 2022 - The total value of transactions on the BVB regulated market and the Multilateral Trading System (MTF) reached 14.09 billion lei in the first half of 2022, up 53% compared to the same period of 2021, but down 35% compared to the end of last year.
At the end of the first six months of 2022, the BET index, the benchmark for the local capital market, which captures the developments of the most traded companies on the regulated market of the BVB, recorded a decrease of 5.87% compared to the end of 2021, while increasing by more than 12% compared to the March low (March 7 - 10,964 points).
The number of trades conducted on the BVB increased by 38% in the first six months of 2022 compared to the first six months of the previous year and decreased by 37% compared to the end of 2021. Approximately 97% of the total value of transactions took place on the regulated market of the BVB, with the remainder on the SMT.
Equities remain the dominant class of financial assets (56% of the total value traded on the BVB), while the value of transactions in government securities as of 30 June 2022 increased significantly compared to the same period of 2021, recording a level of approximately RON 2.21 billion.
At the end of the first half of 2022, the market capitalisation on the regulated market reached RON 193.24 billion, up by about 1.4% compared to 30 June 2021. Compared to the end of 2021, market capitalization (equities only) decreased by 16% at the end of June 2022, amid persistent inflation threats and uncertainties induced by the war in Ukraine.
As far as financial service providers are concerned, at the end of June 2022, a total of 27 intermediaries were active on the regulated market of the BVB, of which 17 Financial Investment Services Companies (FSS), 3 local credit institutions and 7 entities authorised in other EU Member States. Similarly, at the end of June 2022, 20 intermediaries were active on the MTF, of which 16 Financial Investment Services Companies (FSS), 3 local credit institutions and 1 investment firm authorised in another EU Member State.
Therefore, at the end of the first semester of 2022, the most active intermediaries on the BVB (regulated market and SMT) were the SSIFs, the value brokered by them being about 15.6 billion lei. Local intermediaries (SSIFs and credit institutions) accounted for about 93% of the total intermediated value.
At the end of H1 2022, 17 investment management companies (IMS), 84 undertakings for collective investment in transferable securities (UCITS), 27 alternative investment funds (AIF), 5 financial investment companies (SIF), Fondul Proprietatea and 4 depositories were operating in Romania. The total value of the assets of collective investment undertakings (CIUs) in Romania was approximately RON 46.8 billion as of 30 June 2022, down by about 6% compared to the previous year.
On the market as a whole, the consolidated structure of investments of all collective investment undertakings shows a preference for shares, whose total value is about 28.43 billion lei, accounting for about 61% of the total assets of the UCIs. Investments in fixed-income financial instruments at the level of the whole market are worth 15.55 billion lei, representing about 33% of the total assets of the UCIs.
As regards the structure of the UCITS portfolios, it is mainly oriented towards fixed income financial instruments. Of these, the most significant share in the total assets of UCITS is held by government securities (36%), followed by listed corporate bonds (21%).
